Research

My Research

Alongside my teaching and writing (both scholarly and for the public) I have a number of ongoing and organized research projects in various forms. Some of these are book projects, others articles, and some even just general overarching questions and projects I have been thinking about for some time that I'm in the process of making concrete.

Against the History Machine

Book project I am developing out of my dissertation ("The Return of History: Twenty-First Century Cinema and the Crisis of Neoliberalism"). In this project I analyze capitalism's use of history alongside Giovanni Arrigh's periodization of cycles of accumulation and Fredric Jameson's sense of postmodernity to argue that the current wave of accumulation, what some have come to call "neoliberalism," may appear in crisis but can actually be understood as the mature form of enclosure using the technology of A.I. which seeks to transform the living labor of art history into an accumulated and undifferentiated "history" machine. This has impacts both on labor and capitalism's ability to reproduce itself, but also on historical consciousness, the logic of the commodity under the value form, and the history of art and creative work.
